Opportunities are available for those with and without previous experience to join our thriving department of 80+ volunteers and 30+ career firefighters, who respond to over 2400 calls per year within the Brighton and Pittsford, New York communities of Monroe County (Rochester), NY.

1. On-Duty Bunker Program - Full-time college students who already have Firefighter 1 training may apply to live in our "bunker program" while attending full-time college in the Rochester, NY area. Participation in other training outside of shift night is required. Off-duty response is encouraged.

2. On-Duty Squad Program - Members serve a shift with the same group of volunteers from 6pm-6am once per week, responding on a dedicated vehicle to all calls within the district. There is a short drill while on duty, as well. Current shifts are on Mon-Thu evenings. Participation in other training outside of shift night is required. Off-duty response is encouraged.

3. On-Duty Station Program - Volunteers stand-by at the firehouse, in uniform, to ride the trucks with the career firefighters. No pre-scheduling is required, but it is encouraged. Participation in other training outside of station shifts is required. Off-duty response is encouraged.

4. On-Duty Response Vehicle Program - Qualified volunteers are permitted to "sign-out" a Fire Department Ford F350 or Chevy Tahoe for up to 24 hours, and must respond to all calls while on-duty. No pre-scheduling is required, but it is encouraged. Participation in training outside of on-duty shifts is required. Off-duty response is encouraged.

5. On-Duty Personal Vehicle Program - Members use our WhenIWork App to sign-up for a shift 9pm-5am and anytime on the weekends (in 4-hour blocks) to respond to directly to the scene of calls in their personal vehicles. Participation in training outside of on-duty shifts is required.

6. Off-Duty Personal Vehicle Program - All volunteers are issued Minitor/Unication Fire Pagers and given access to our Smartphone Alerting App, as well as firefighting gear to store in the trunk of their personal car. Members respond to directly to the scene of calls in their personal vehicles as their personal obligations and schedule permit. Participation in training is required.

BFD also offers a program for high-school-aged youths, in partnership with the Exploring Program. While technically not members of the fire department, BFD explorers work in the firehouse and at the scene of calls alongside our volunteer and career firefighters, in low-risk situations, to assist firefighters. It is a great networking experience, as well as a great opportunity to learn the business and skills of emergency services.
