FIND A LOCAL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Seven out of ten firefighters and emergency responders are volunteers. If you have the heart to serve your community, you have everything you need.

HOW TO BECOME A VOLUNTEER AT YOUR LOCAL FIRE STATION

If you're ready to serve your community and build bonds with a fire family, here's what you need to know.

1. CONSIDER THE COMMITMENT

The first step to becoming a volunteer firefighter or volunteer at your fire department is to consider the commitment it takes to do this crucial work for your community. You'll need to be a dedicated member of the department and may be asked to keep a flexible schedule, so that you can be ready whenever duty calls.

2. CHECK OPPORTUNITIES

You can take many paths to volunteer at your local fire department. Volunteer EMS/EMT, firefighter, paramedic, and support roles are available. Most departments offer training on the job. Keep in mind that some positions vary by department and may require specific certifications or hours. To find available opportunities near you, start by typing your zip code into the search bar at the top of this page and reviewing the minimum requirements. If you need to take any steps to meet the minimum requirements — like getting a valid license — be sure to do those before applying.

3. CONNECT WITH A DEPARTMENT

Once you've fulfilled all of the necessary requirements, connect with the local department you're interested in. Consider asking these questions:

  • Are there any unique steps in your department's application process?
  • What does your volunteer firefighter screening process involve?
  • What are the required minimum hours per week for volunteer firefighters to work?
  • Can I visit the fire station to get a better feel for the environment?
