Description
Town of Canton Volunteer Fire & EMS Department is seeking individuals who value life, have a sense of adventure, are willing to invest their time and share their talents to support our community. Our work offers a sense of pride and camaraderie that's the result of both individual accomplishment and working with police, community leaders and neighbors for the protection of life, property and the environment. We provide all training and equipment, and conduct weekly drills to ensure our volunteers are ready to respond from fire stations in Collinsville, Canton and North Canton, CT. Small business owners, construction workers, teachers, executives, medical professionals, lawyers, parents, teenagers and your neighbors have trained to become volunteer firefighters and/or EMTs, Fire Police and Cadets. Requirements
FIRE OPERATIONS: On any given day, you may be called on to rescue an injured kayaker on the Farmington River; extricate a patient from a car accident; respond to a hazardous material incident; or extinguish a brush fire. Members can: train to be certified firefighters; obtain a license to drive and operate apparatus; learn many other skills to ensure they are ready to respond.
EMS OPERATIONS: Our ambulance is largely staffed by volunteer EMTs. We provide the training to obtain EMR or EMT certifications, as well as training to operate emergency vehicles. You can learn how to: Diagnose and treat a wide variety of different medical emergencies and care for patients after car accidents.
FIRE POLICE: Working hand-in-hand with fire, EMS and the Canton, CT Police Department, Fire Police coordinate traffic control at emergency scenes, including the establishment of a landing zone and communication with incoming medical helicopters, such as Life Star.
CADET PROGRAM: Since the 1980's, more than 100 young men and women have graduated from Canton's Cadet Program. You can join at age 14 and begin hands-on training and responding, with appropriate restrictions, to a wide variety of fire and medical emergencies. Many of Canton's Cadets move on to successful careers as paid firefighters, paramedics or police officers.
