Description of the Job:
A Firefighter shall perform duties associated with fire suppression, emergency medical assistance, rescue activities, special operations, fire prevention, community services, as well as routine functions to assure the facilities, equipment, and personnel are maintained in a state of constant readiness. The Firefighter shall be required to participate in ongoing training programs as directed, and be able to render skilled emergency services in hazardous situations, under stressful conditions, in potentially dangerous environments. An individual in this position may experience prolonged exposure to potentially dangerous and hazardous events and incidents. The Firefighter is supervised by a Fire Captain or an Officer in charge of the shift.

Essential Functions of the Job:
Respond to minor and major calls for assistance and service.
Perform such duties as driving emergency vehicles and apparatus, working on the fire
ground or other incident site, serving in an assigned sector, performing exhaustive
physical labor, operating apparatus, tools, appliances and other job related equipment.
Perform rescue work and administer emergency medical assistance, assist in fire
suppression, salvage, overhaul and fire cause determination.
Perform daily maintenance work at the fire station and fire departmental facilities,
equipment maintenance, janitorial functions, and grounds upkeep.
Participate in training programs.
Prepare records and reports, both written and computer generated.
Participate in code enforcement, inspection program and public education.
Participate in assignments on specialized departmental teams.
Conduct special community service activities, such as fire extinguisher educational programs.
Other related duties as assigned.

Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
Must be 21 years of age by starting date.
Education equivalent to completion of the 12th grade.
Ability to pass the TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education)
A valid Motor Vehicle Operators license.
Hearing must be normal and vision must be correctable to 20/30 and a field of vision of
140 degrees per NFPA guidelines.



Preferred Qualifications:
Previous experience as a volunteer or paid firefighter.
State or National certification as an EMT-B (Basic).
Certification as a Firefighter I, II.
Demonstrated ability to act and react calmly in stressful situations.
In-depth knowledge of the City of Scottsbluff Fire Department, its policies and
procedures, duties and functions.
Knowledge of streets and occupancies within the City of Scottsbluff.
