Description
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
• Responds to fire alarms and extinguishes fire;
• Performs firefighting, salvage, and rescue functions;
• Performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water and removing debris;
• Operates and helps to maintain and is knowledgeable in the use of specialized equipment such as self-contained breathing apparatus, power rescue equipment, air bags, gas detectors, heat detectors, generators, chain saws, and more;
• Responds to and renders assistance in emergency cases when dispatched;
• Assists in cleaning equipment and put apparatus back in service after a fire at the station;
• Operates and maintains radios and other communications equipment;
• Participates in required training classes and education;
• Participates in monthly business meetings and fundraising activities of the Fire Department;
• Assists in maintaining building quarters and grounds;
• Assists in performing fire prevention functions, including assisting with pre-fire planning and speaking to schools and the general public about fire prevention.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and volunteers, other agencies, and the general public.
• Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City of Brenham and Fire Department policies and procedures;
Supervisory Responsibilities
This is a non-supervisory position; however the firefighter may be called upon to exhibit his/her leadership abilities.

Requirements
Skill/Ability To
Operate computers; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; read and understand manuals, policies, and other documents; and operate and maintain fire suppression vehicles and equipment.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
• Must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid Class B Driver’s license, and have an acceptable driving record and insurance coverage on personal vehicle that responds to fire alarms.
• The new firefighter recruit will be required to complete SFFMA Firefighter I within his first 6 months and SFFMA Firefighter II within 9 months of being voted into the department; Recruit firefighter will also be required to take and pass the SFFMA Firefighter I & II test;
