Becoming a firefighter can be very exciting and rewarding. Most citizens do not get to see or experience a fire or rescue much less perform an active role at the scene. Volunteer firefighters respond to these emergencies and help the people involved.

There are many duties in the fire department. Suppression firefighters enter buildings; extinguish fires and perform rescues. They may also perform many support functions. Firefighters in the Support role perform fire operations support such as placing ladders, deploying hose lines or pumping fire apparatus. They may also perform duties involving emergency medical, search and rescue, water rescue, ropes rescue, administration and command staff functions.
