After successful completion of the interview process, written test, physical agility, background check and medical physical you will begin Thurston County Recruit Academy. Academy is 4 months long, every Tuesday and Thursday evening with all day Saturday skills days on the drill ground. While in academy you will be assigned to a shift and receive a shift mentor to assist you through academy and welcome you to the department and the shift you will be working with. As a volunteer firefighter, you will be required to do a minimum of 36 shift hours per month and also have the opportunity to participate in some of our annual department events like the Easter Egg Hunt or Open house. The days and hours you choose to work are scheduled by you through our scheduling program and for volunteers usually begins at 7pm overnight to 7am (12 hour shift). You will also have the opportunity to become a driver/operator of the fire apparatus, become and EMT, get red card certified to participate in wildland firefighting and move up to become a Master Firefighter or even a volunteer lieutenant.

You must be 18 years of age, possess a high school diploma or certificate of education competence and possess a valid Washington State drivers license.
