Description
Firefighters and Emergency Medical Technicians provide firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical services including, but not limited to: Fire control and extinguishment, driving and operating firefighting apparatus and emergency vehicles, rescue, medical treatment, training, public education, and station/equipment maintenance duties.

Essential job functions include:
Safe and effective operation to protect lives, the environment, and property at fire, hazardous materials and rescue incidents and skillful use of specialized tools and equipment to include, but not limited to hose, nozzles, and appliances; power tools, and extrication equipment.
Provision of basic life support resuscitation (CPR) and basic first aid
Performing public education duties.
Participating in training and development activities to maintain and improve professional knowledge and skills.
Performance of routine station and apparatus maintenance duties.
Members may also be responsible for safe and effective operation of apparatus and boats under non-emergency and emergency conditions.

Requirements
**Applicants who do not currently possess Firefighter certification should anticipate attending Recruit firefighter academy in the Fall of 2017. Further details will be discussed during candidate selection.

Routine work activity requires moderate strength, endurance, and aerobic capacity. However, emergency response operations require significant physical capacity.

Physical demands include:
Heavy manual labor while wearing firefighter’s personal protective equipment and self-contained breathing apparatus.
Work out doors in all types of weather conditions.
Manual dexterity and visual acuity to operate a variety of mechanical and office equipment.
Crawling, bending, stooping, kneeling, and performing repetitive lifting for an extended period of time.

Communicate effectively other emergency services personnel and the public
Understand and follow written instructions
Ability to perform mental mathematical calculations such as required for determining required pressure when operating fire pumps.
Meet the physical demands of the position as established by the agency
Ability to work at heights, in enclosed spaces, and under visually obscured conditions
Mechanical aptitude and the ability to effectively use firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical tools and equipment

Education and Experience
Applicants should have a high school education (or equivalent). Desirable experience includes prior experience as a Firefighter, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic or similar work experience

Licenses, Certification, and Other Requirements
Applicants must meet the following requirements prior to selection and assignment for training:
Successful completion of the Entry Process including candidate physical ability test (CPAT)
Meeting the requirements of the Agency’s Medical Physical Examination
Successfully pass the Agency’s screening for illegal drug use

Desirable Qualifications
The following qualifications are not required for selection, but are desirable:
Current Firefighter certification
Current Emergency Medical Technician certification
Commercial Driver’s License
