The North Mason Regional Fire Authority (NMRFA), located in Mason County, Washington, seeks motivated individuals for the Volunteer Student Firefighter program. The Student Firefighter Program is designed for individuals aspiring to become a Career Firefighter or Paramedic. These positions are highly coveted and competitively selected, as the Fire Authority maintains only six (6) positions for Student Firefighters. Selected candidates will work along side Career Firefighters and Paramedics to attain valuable experience in the following skills:

Firefighting
Emergency Medical Services
Rescue
Wildland Firefighting

Student Firefighters are responsible for work performed in combating, extinguishing and preventing fires and protection of life and property through fire suppression and prevention, public education and other emergency service activities. Duties may also include support services under the supervision of a Duty Officer.

Participants make a minimum two-year commitment and all expenses for equipment and training are provided by the Fire Authority. Additionally, participants receive a monthly stipend to assist with any personal expenses. To date, over half of the Fire Authority’s career personnel have been hired from the Student Firefighter Program.

The Fire Authority will ensure that candidates are trained to meet the standards of FF1 Certification requirements of the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) and obtain certification as an EMT Basic from Washington State Department of Health and National Registry EMT. In addition to this premium training opportunity candidates are eligible to participate in the following training advancement opportunities:

Recruit Academy: A twelve week program at Bates Technical College in Tacoma;
IV Technician, BLS Technician, ALS Assistant, Ambulance Operator;
Emergency Vehicle Incident Preparedness (EVIP), Pumper School, Engine Driver, Tender Driver, Brush Truck Driver;
Wildland Firefighting;
Off Road Vehicle Rescue Team Member.

The North Mason Regional Fire Authority serves Belfair and surrounding communities in North Mason County. The Authority covers 132 square miles and serves a population of 22,000 residents. This population nearly doubles in the summertime recreation season. North Mason County is a picturesque community that surrounds the south end of the Hood Canal. It serves as a delightful bedroom community for nearby Bremerton and Tacoma. Surrounded by breathtaking mountains, the area is heavily forested and dotted with numerous lakes, providing limitless outdoor recreational opportunities. North Mason has an award-winning school district and library and is home to the state’s largest off-road vehicle park, located in the Tahuya State Forest. Several infrastructure projects currently underway within the Authority are driving an unprecedented level of community growth.

Requirements
Must be 18 years of age;
High School Diploma or GED;
Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record;
Pass a background check;
Pass a physical examination and a functional capacity test;
Obtain BLS, CPR and First Aid certification within the first three months of acceptance;
Provide a minimum of a two-year commitment to the training program.
