Firefighter – Medical Focus

Amsterdam Rural Fire Dist

7170 Churchill Rd
Manhattan, MT 59741
406-282-7945

Description
A Medical Focused Firefighter responds to both emergent and non-emergent calls for assistance made by the public. These may include sickness and injury, as well as medical support of Firefighting, HazMat, and Rescue operations. ARFD is a first responder agency that does not transport patients, but provides basic life support until care is transferred to a transport agency.

Work direction is provided by department officers, incident commanders, more qualified medical staff (i.e. paramedics and doctors), and state and local directives.

Volunteer Category: Firefighter, EMT

Requirements
The Medical Focused Firefighter must be (or become within the first year of service) a licensed Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) with the State of Montana. Regular medical training attendance is required and will fulfill both Montana and NREMT Continuing Education (CE) and refresher training requirements. Additionally, certain additional departmental training, skill proficiency demonstration, and officer approval is required prior to the member responding to calls and being issued a pager. A successful background investigation is required before an individual may respond to calls for service.

This role often involves lifting of equipment and patients and can require extended kneeling or other positions of discomfort. Those filling this role should have and maintain a level of physical fitness necessary to perform these tasks.

Attendance at regular department training is encouraged for at least the beginning portion of the training to be made aware of department announcements and activities, as well as to interface with the department as a whole. The training topic or activity occurring will determine whether the Medical Focused Firefighter attends the duration of the training. Many Medical tasks overlap or support department operations and so a fair number of these trainings will be pertinent. An average of 10+ hours per month should be planned to successfully fulfill this position.
