Description
General Statement of Duties: Under supervision, responds to all calls, drives fire apparatus, participates in fire prevention, inspections, station maintenance, and training activities. Completes all other tasks assigned.

Distinguishing Features of the Class: A firefighter is responsible for performing hazardous tasks under emergency conditions. The work in this class demands heavy physical labor for periods of various duration under hazardous conditions and extreme weather conditions. The work requires adherence to departmental rules and regulations. Receives and accepts assignments made by supervisors of specific tasks and indicated methods and procedures to be followed. Assignments may be made through either oral or written instructions. The work is closely inspected in process and upon completion.

Duties—Examples of Work:
· Responds to alarms and assists in the suppression of fires.
· Performs rescues, entry, ventilation, and salvage work.
· Operates equipment and assists in the suppression of fires in the protection of life and property.
· Participates in the overhaul of fire scenes.
· Performs clean-up and helps prepare equipment and vehicles for future alarms.
· Assists in maintaining fire apparatus, equipment, and fire stations.
· Participates in continuing training and instruction programs of a technical nature.
· Attends and participates in drills and classes.
· Assists in fire prevention activities.
· Wears appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in all areas of operations.
· Works within the Incident Command System (ICS).
· Lifting, carrying, and/or dragging up to 100 lbs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Essential:
· Ability to read and understand departmental rules, regulations, and policies.
· Ability to analyze situations and adapt quickly and effectively by taking reasonable courses of action giving due regard to the surrounding hazards of each situation.
· Ability to write clear and accurate reports.
· Ability to understand and follow oral or written directions.
· Ability to learn technical firefighting skills and techniques.
· Ability to apply the principles of hydraulics to fire suppression.
· Ability to operate fire apparatus.
· Maintain cooperative relationships with fellow firefighters and the public.
· Ability to function under extreme mental and physical stress.

Requirements
Acceptance Experience and Training:

· 18 years of age
· High School diploma or equivalent

Special Requirements:

· Valid Driver License.
· Ability to obtain Illinois Class B driver license or equivalent at the Fire Chief’s discretion.
· Continuous progress towards the Basic Operations Firefighter Certification with a goal of obtaining the certification within the first 3 years.
