Description
Active firefighters are directly involved in the suppression of fires and the mitigation of other types of emergency incidents under the direction of Company Officers and the Fire Chiefs. Participation as a fire and rescue volunteer involves strenuous physical activities which require strength and endurance. Firefighting and emergency medical response remain some of the most dangerous occupations in the United States. As a fire and rescue volunteer candidates will face a number of challenging situations
and will be expected to be able to perform their duty under highly stressful and physically demanding conditions that include:

Regularly wearing personal protective equipment weighing up to 75 lbs. for long periods
Working in hot and smoky environments
Working with hand tools, power equipment and hoses for long periods
Climbing stairs and ladders
Exposure to inclement weather for long periods
Regularly lifting weight up to 150 lbs

Requirements
Membership Categories:
Active – Active members perform interior or exterior firefighting duties, act as apparatus chauffeurs, and conduct all other fire related activities.

Associate – Associate members are responsible for the administrative operations of our departments. Their responsibility is to serve on committees, hold corporate offices, etc.

Membership Qualifications:
Active:

Must be age 18 or over (active member), 16 to 18 (junior member)
In good health and physically able to perform firefighting duties
Legally authorized to reside and work in the United States
No felony convictions, (misdemeanor convictions are considered on a case by case basis)

Associate:

Must be age 18 or over
Legally authorized to reside and work in the United States
No felony convictions (misdemeanor convictions are considered on a case by case basis)

Membership Requirements:
Active Member:

Completion of the Volunteer Firefighter Recruit program
Completion of State of Connecticut Firefighter 1 and EMS certification training
Participation in the minimum number of required drills, monthly meetings and department activities


Associate Member:

Attendance at the minimum number of required monthly meetings
Participation in all other required department functions and activities
Serve on at least one committee
