Description
Thank you for your interest in volunteering with the Manistee Township Fire Department. These pages provide a brief explanation of the basic requirements of the application process, probationary requirements, and member’s duties, as well as the Fire Department Structure.

The Manistee Twp. Fire Dept. has been saving lives and property for over 40 years now. The community relies on dedicated volunteers willing to commit the time necessary to our department to respond to more than 245 emergency calls per year. The department responds to structure fires, rescues, medical emergencies, motor vehicle accidents, forest fires, fire alarms, and public service calls to name a few. Department membership offers a once in a lifetime experience to become a part of a team that is dedicated to saving lives, property, and resources.

A firefighter serves the community in a public safety position of trust. Firefighters must be trustworthy, honest and willing to demonstrate loyalty and reliability. This includes a clean driving record and background, no drug use, and responsible alcohol use. A DUI conviction within 3-5 years of testing will likely disqualify you from being accepted.

Firefighting is a profession that takes preparation through education and training. We hope you will make the commitment needed to become part of this team and, as such, part of the tradition of excellence.

Membership Application Procedure:
 Pick up an application at the station on any Monday night from 7pm to 9pm.
 Please fill out ALL portions of the application.
 Include copies of any fire/medical training or certifications you have with your application.
 Bring your application back to the station on any Monday night from 7pm to 9pm and give to an officer.

The Interview Committee will review your application and you will be called to setup an interview. Interviews are usually held prior to our 7pm Monday night meetings. This is a verbal informal interview and further explanation of the Fire Department procedures and expectations.

The interview Committee will decide whether your application should proceed to the Department for a vote at the next business meeting. If your application is approved, you will begin a 6 month probationary period.Upon approval for probationary membership you may receive gear/pager/or other equipment necessary to meet the needs of you and the dept.

During your probationary time you are subject to approval of the membership. You are encouraged to come down to the station anytime there is an special event, training, meeting, department function, and medical/fire call. This allows you to get to know your fellow firefighters and for them to get to know you.

As a probationary member, you are encouraged to run as many calls as possible. There are no restrictions on what time of day you run, or what types of calls you run (unless you are a cadet member) or non-medical. However, your assigned duties on any call will be relevant to your current level of training. During this time you will also not be allowed to run lights and siren.
