GENERAL SUMMARY

Personnel assigned the position of Fire Fighter are responsible for the protection of life, limb, and property by performing fire fighting, rescue, emergency medical, and hazardous material intervention. Fire Fighters are also expected to assist with fire prevention, fire inspections, and supporting the safety of the community. Within the station, Fire fighters assist with maintaining fire equipment, apparatus, and department facilities. Fire Fighting personnel must operate within a chain of command and exercise good judgment in the station and on the fire ground. Personnel assigned the position of Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) are licensed by the State of Michigan to provide patient care. EMRs are responsible for rendering care to ill or injured patients in a variety of circumstances. EMRs assist at fires and other hazardous incidents by providing patient care, responder medical assessment, and rehabilitation. EMRs are expected to provide care to patients in vehicles and other close quarters. EMRs are further expected to assist with home safety inspections and support the health and welfare of the community. Within the station, EMRs assist with maintaining equipment, apparatus, and department facilities. EMR personnel must operate within a chain of command and exercise good judgment in the performance of their duties both in the station and on the scene of an incident. Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - FIRE FIGHTER

EDUCATION:
* Must be 18 years or older at time of employment and be a high school graduate or have a GED equivalent.
* Fire Fighter I & II – State of Michigan Certification
* Hazardous Materials Operations Level – State of Michigan Certification
* NIMS 100, 200, 700 and 800.

EXPERIENCE:
* Previous experience as a fire fighter preferred, but willing to train.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
* Valid State of Michigan Driver’s License
* Basic Life Support Certification
* Basic computer data entry and word processing skills are helpful

Paid on call and volunteer fire fighters must be certified as a FFI, FFII, ICS, NIMS by the Michigan Fire Fighter Training Council within twenty-four (24) months of hire.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND OPERATING ENVIRONMENT

This job requires the ability to perform the essential functions contained in this description. These include, but are not limited to, the following physical requirements. Reasonable accommodations will be made for otherwise qualified applicants unable to fulfill one or more of these requirements.

This position requires the ability to:
• Walk over rough and/or unstable terrain
• Climb up and down stairs and ladders carrying heavy loads, often in excess of 50 pounds
• Bend, stoop, and twist while both stationary and moving
• Stand for long periods of time
• Carry, swing, drag, lift or otherwise use heavy tools.
• Work both indoors and outdoors during extremes in temperature and humidity, including exposure to high winds and precipitation.
• Work in enclosed or confined spaces that may restrict movement
• Move and function with low to no visibility
• Work in close proximity to hazards such as fire, explosives, chemicals, biological agents, electrical shock, structural hazards, weapons, hostile individuals, fast moving vehicles, etc.
• Work in areas with loud noise and vibration from tools, machinery and equipment
• Work within the restrictions of personal protective equipment (self-contained breathing apparatus, fire fighter turnout clothing, hearing and eye protection, encapsulated suits, etc.)
• Work while exposed to products of combustion including heat and smoke.

Fire fighters must be physically and medically qualified to fulfill the position’s duties. This capacity is determined by a physical ability test and by a medical examination performed by a physician.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - EMR

EDUCATION:

* Current Michigan Emergency Medical License
* Current Basic Life Support Certification
* NIMS 100, 200, 700 and 800.

EXPERIENCE:
* Satisfactory completion of the EFD – EMS Pre-employment/Annual Skills and Protocol Evaluation.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
* Valid State of Michigan Driver’s License
* Basic computer data entry and word processing skills are helpful

Paid on call and volunteer emergency responders must complete the minimum requirements and achieve State of Michigan licensure within twenty-four (24) months of hire.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND OPERATING ENVIRONMENT

• Squat, kneel, and stand for extended periods of time
• Carry, swing, drag, lift or otherwise use equipment
• Lift a minimum of 100 pounds without assistance
• Lift and carry ill or injured patients as well as push and pull stretchers
• Lift and carry ill or injured patients up and down stairs
• Work both indoors and outdoors during extremes in temperature and humidity, and includes exposure to high winds and precipitation.
• Work in enclosed spaces that restrict access and movement
• Move and function with low light and limited visibility
• Work in close proximity to hazards such as electrical shock, structural hazards, hostile individuals, fast moving vehicles, etc.
• Work in areas with loud noise and/or vibration from tools, machinery, equipment, and crowds
• Work within the restrictions of personal protective equipment (Tyvek suit, hearing and eye protection, gloves, head protection, coveralls, etc.)

EMRs must be physically and medically qualified to fulfill the position’s duties. This capacity is determined by a physical ability test and by a medical examination performed by a physician.
