Description
Responds to calls when dispatched, gains access to the patient and assesses the extent of their injuries or illness;
Provides life support services to stabilize persons in life threatening situations resulting from trauma and other medical emergencies;
Communicates with dispatcher requesting additional assistance or services as necessary;
Uses prescribed techniques and equipment to provide patient care and provide additional emergency care following established protocols;
Seeks medical direction from Medical Control Physician and carries out orders as appropriate;
Assists with lifting, carrying and properly loading patient into the ambulance;
Reports verbally and in writing observations of the patient’s emergency and care provided to emergency department staff and assists as required;
Replaces supplies, properly disposes of medical waste, cleans contaminated equipment according to established guidelines and maintains ambulance in operable condition;
Receives and transmits communications from the public and agencies requesting emergency services;
May assist in driving emergency services vehicles.

Requirements
Upon entering the fire department and beginning their probationary period members must: maintain a 20% quota of all incidents including: fires, ambulance calls, weekly trainings/drills, department and company meetings. Within one year of joining members must complete EMT-Basic course with Suffolk County EMS and pass the NYS EMT Exam, attend all OSHA training, gain working knowledge on all fire apparatus, become driver qualified on ambulances. EMS members must maintain their EMT-B certifaction for at least 10 years. Additional trainings upon joining will be discussed.
